Liquid Earth- love it! So on my second solo outing to Fells Point, I ran across Liquid Earth. This is the friendly vegan/vegetarian joint you’ve been looking for.
The staff were so fun and friendly, that it was easy
to see it as one of those joints you just end up falling in love with and coming
back just for the ambiance, if not for the amazing food. (And even if you don't like "health food" you should check out their website, cuz it's pretty frickin' amazing, as well.)
Paul- just as sweet as the expression on his face. He is someone I met on my last day at the in
Bmore at the hostel. Like so much of
what I experienced during my stay, meeting Paul was an unexpected pleasure that
welcomed me with open grace. Paul was staying at the hostel on his way to Europe
for a week long adventure. He is in the national guards (so blessed to not have
been shipped off to Iraq!), but really, he is a vocalist and a pianist- amongst
other things. We talked about how fear blocks creative expression and constricts
the voice, as well as the body. We talked about using vocal toning as a healing tool and how we are all manifestations of sound and frequency. We swapped stories and smiles, and I walked
away feeling like the universe had snuck up behind me with another big
hug.
Eric is from Sweden. He, like many of the other young hostellers, is taking a tour of various places around the world, including some of the major cities of the US. We talked about the differences in health care between Sweden and America and the general lack of education that Americans have regarding world history and national geography. He showed me a video on youtube called “Americans are not stupid.” I had to confess, when it comes to world history and national geography, I have some major, gaping holes in my education, as well (where is Jon Hansen when you need him?).
last night, i was avoiding the rewrite i need to do on my sucky five page screenplay for my film class by hanging out at the Java House and reading graphic novels i'd checked out from the library. ( i love iowa city for being able to do all of those things- take a film class, write a sucky screenplay, being able to find cool graphic novels at the local library and go to a cool coffee shop to read them- which is just two block away from the library itself.) anywho, so i was sitting there reading and i had moved onto my second novel, Ultimate Spider-man, vol 7, and my second pot of Darjeeling tea. and i was so super impressed by the writing. it was amazingly realistic. it was so good, i thought it may have been written by Joss Whedon, for goodness sakes. but it was written by Brian Michael Bendis- and i'm not a big enough comic book geek to know who that is, but he is so good it makes me want to find out. so this version of Spider-man has both he and the Xmen- who he runs into- all in high school. and usually i'm annoyed when people do these off shoot versions of comic themes, but i decided i just need to get over that, let go of the control, and just enjoy what is offered. it made me think of my friend Jon, who can appreciate variations on all sorts of things without demanding it be consistent with a personal standard. i have a very hard time not critiquing things when i find them weak in certain areas, according to my ideals. it's a gift, it's a curse. (oh, so yes- the irony here is that reading a Spider-man comic book showed me what my screenplay was lacking in terms of good dialogue. funny how these things work out, yes?)
anyway, so there i was giggling away at this truly engaging dialogue and self-commentary of the characters, when i hear music start up in the back of Java House. instead of being annoyed, which is my usual response to the music they have at the Java house (specifically, the friday morning "Java House Blend" show, which is usually just a little to country for my likings), i felt compelled to go check out what was going on. There on the stage was a woman playing violin and vocals, another flame haired woman playing cello, and a guy alternating between, accordion, vocal beatbox, and keyboard. the music was so captivating and engaging. i finally had to put down my comic and go to the back room and listen. i thought, when will i get to see this band again, who knows when they will be coming to Iowa City. (i found other people also being pulled in from the front room by the music coming from this amazing trio, as well) but it turns out they are local. after the performance, i went up to buy a cd, and so sadly, they had none! so i scolded them for not having anything to sell after this great performance and Sky, the amazing vocalist and violinist who tended to smile throughout the show, was quite flattered. but that wasn't the point, i really wanted a cd! they sounded like a marriage between Rasputina and Regina Specktor- but they definitely had their own sound as well. they would also use their various instruments as percussion instruments as well depending on the song. they just sounded so damn good! so when i spoke to the guy, Harlan (the newest addition to the group- who is adorable, btw), he gave me their myspace webpage. i wanted to leave it here for anyone to check out. the talented woman on the cello is named Ursua. so if you look at it, you can easily see where the name Skursula came from, right? anyway, here is that link: www.myspace.com/skursula
arlight, now i must get ready and run out the door for brunch at the Leaf Kitchen w/ a couple of friends. i've heard this place is amazing, so i am excited to check it out.
chow for now, chicken-eye-brow,
